“Old Friends and New Opportunities,” Hybrid Mom Blog, April 29, 2010

Old Friends and New Opportunites Thursday, April 29th, 2010 It’s funny how life is…how we fear change and when “our life plan” changes it really throws us.  We think, “that’s it, I quit.”  Whether it’s in love, relationships, work…whatever.  That concept always throws me. QUIT…????  I have had single friends who get sick of dating and say they’re done, closing themselves off and missing opportunities. I definitely think you put out different vibes and it effects the path your life takes. The same can be said for my acting life.  When I am hunkered down on a show I love and have a multiple year contract I am the happiest.  But things change, shows change.  I have been let go, I have been killed off (I bet not many of you can say that), each time a bit paralyzing, but never did I think I would stop trying.  When people ask me if I think I will stop or retire some day, I think “from what?”  If I keep putting myself out there, keep trying, things will happen.  Sure there are disappointments; sometimes more that rewards, but I keep on trucking…perseverance must be the key.  An actor friend of mine jokingly said recently that late in our life our job opportunities would be based on whose left in the game (not dead is what he really said). They’ll call...

“My Latest Project,” Hybrid Mom Blog, April 22, 2010

My Latest Project Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 A good friend of mine needed to add a bathroom to a little guesthouse she has in her back yard.  It is a converted old garage I suppose (perhaps for a model T) with an extra room connected to it.  She had been contemplating for a while about adding the bath but all the bids she got were outrageous.  I mentioned to her that another friend of ours was doing a big remodel and that her brother was her contractor.  So I asked him to please come by and give her a bid for her project.  I offered to help her pick out tiles, decor, ect., knowing that I could find what she wanted for less money than she was thinking she had to spend.  She got the bid from our friends brother and a plumber and with some simple drawings to the city for permits, it was a go. I looked through different on line stores and found just the right cabinet to copy from Restoration Hardware.  I found a local lumberyard with a cabinetmaker and gave him a copy of what I wanted.  He hooked me up with a stone guy who had remnants so my friend paid $425.00 for the cabinet instead of RH price of $1900 plus.  I also had him copy a medicine cabinet from RH.  As you can see from the photos, they came...

“Make a Commitment to Yourselves Mom,” Hybrid Mom Blog, April 15, 2010

Make a Commitment to Yourselves Moms Thursday, April 15th, 2010 The other day when I set out to make the video for Hybrid Mom’s mother’s Day contest, I really got to thinking about how things go…especially with motherhood.  We all most likely started out fairly pulled together, getting dressed in the morning, complete with hair blown dry and make-up and headed out to work or to at least ready to start our day.  Then come the things that make us scramble through our day.  Juggling our husband, children, jobs, house, groceries, dinner, baths…oh my, the list could go on forever.  Recently a young mom friend of mine was venting to me that when her husband “babysits” while she runs out he is constantly calling her about how much longer she would be out.  How is it “babysitting” with them???  It is truly amazing how much us moms can handle.  The original multi-taskers! Somewhere in between all those tasks, though, it’s very easy for us to forget about ourselves, our own well being and even our appearances – and believe me when I say I’m no exception.  As I have said before I love projects and gardening. So often after exercising in the morning, I don’t want to take a shower right away because if I’m all cleaned up I don’t want to get dirty again in the yard. More times...

“Garden Whimsies,” Hybrid Mom Blog, April 8, 2010

Garden Whimsies Thursday, April 8th, 2010 If you have been following my blogs, you all have read I love gardening!  In fact one of my favorite birthday presents this year was a gift card to OSH hardware and garden store.  Like most things in my life I don’t necessarily have a preconceived plan, but go at it and it unfolds in front of me.  I was just in Chicago and although winter was just ending I could tell that the neighborhoods weren’t busting with “gardens” like where I live.  I really appreciate our long growing season!  Last week my blog was titled “Transformation Complete” but you can always be adding to your garden. One thing you can add to any garden is a little treasure or little whimsy.  Many of my friends are much more formal than I am, but I like to add little personal things to the garden, things that make me smile…little surprises.  I don’t live near the beach, yet I have A LOT of shells around.  A grouping of starfish on a hedge.  A turtle incrusted with shells and some large shells in the flowerbeds.  I have my daughter and husbands hand and footprint in the garden.  I have little pebbles between stones.  I love fountains and I add them where I can.  Between those and my multitude of wind chimes, it makes for a little relaxing...

“Transformation Complete,” Hybrid Mom Blog, April 1, 2010

Transformation Complete  Thursday, April 1st, 2010 If you have been reading my blog you know I have been working on a new vegetable garden. Like so many things it has taken on a life of its own.  I get a little carried away with the “creating “ aspect and something small turns into a journey, a transformation all-together.  I have been of the mindset of making a spot that is overflowing with fruits, vegetables and flowers.  I think I have achieved that.  It looks more complicated than it really was.  I started by killing the grass, and then, with the help of my gardener, building two raised veggie beds that we filled with half compost and half soil. I made a path that winds through the area and added a flowerbed on one side of the path.  I laid plastic down to block any weeds that might try to make their way through and then graveled the path.  I even added a little cement bench to sit (wouldn’t that be nice) and enjoy the garden.  It looks inviting anyway. I got to the point where I had too many plants for my raised beds so I started adding them to the other beds…an artichoke here, some kumquats and strawberries there. FUN!  I made teepees from bamboo poles and twine for the pumpkins to grow up and I staked the 5...
